Today we learned about county government in the a.m. part of class today. The first we did was listen and talk about Lulu's newspaper article which was about how the state of Texas is taking over HISD after a 4 year texas supreme court case. We next started on county government and went over different posistions and what they do. After, we had a game we played about a city and we have to meet needs of the citizens and at the same time, manage the city's money. We also created posters on canva about different positions in the county government. We had to find the current holder of the position, talk about what the position does and about the position holder. Afterwards, we presented out boards to the class. In the p.m., we went to the Contemporary Arts Museum and went to an exhibit called "Where do we go from here?". We explored it and each of us found a piece of work that either we could reflect on it to ourselves or it had to do something with civics. We then walked back and stopped at the park where we hung out and shared what we each chose.
I feel like today was a great experience to learn about new things. The work on the county helped us to understand how the county works and the most important positions in it. Even though the game we played was very hard and we were struggling and we barely got through it, it was fun and it showed lots of opportunity for teamwork and laughs. The work at the museum was very impressive and there were many pieces that we could say we could relate to. It was somewhat hard to find something that had to do with civics because the prompt to the exhibit didnt have anything directly related to civics.
